About the creator and author - Fay Maddison

Fay grew up in the small town of Darwin, Australia. The ‘out-back’ hometown was hot, humid and alive with colorful birds and insects. Nestled against a backdrop of rainbow-colored cliffs, the town’s beaches were skirted by exotic, overgrown tropical bushes, strange looking flowers and majestic old trees. Ever leaf was different. Every plant and flower enticed you closer... Insects large and small - silvery spiders, neon-colored beetles were everywhere...

The sea brought in treasures – flotsam and jetsam from distant places. The tidal pools were overflowing with wonders to be discovered. The magic of the Australian bush-land and the beaches stirred young Fay’s imagination and a love of story was born. “Reading, drawing and writing stories felt like I had landed on a comfortable old couch – with an old friend. Libraries, old books – especially fairytales from distant lands enticed me.”

My friends, the characters that I had discovered in my imagination and in those exotic, colorful, over-grown gardens of Northern Australia have now finally found their way to the pages of my picture books and novels named Natasha’s Wood. Those funny Frill-Necked lizards (dragons for sure), and Goannas - are also known as a monitor lizard - are closely related to Komodo dragons.

Flitting about in my child's mind from the past were the Crotons plant.

From those multi-colored plants came the birth of my colorful

ever bright neon pollen fairies. Bush-land trips introduced me

to the tap-dancing very inquisitive wandering Emus and old

horses. These very different flora and fauna have never

left my heart!”

“There was a great tree in my early childhood garden, home…”

Like many other Australian children Fay also searched out relief from the hot burning sun. Fay found solace and the joy of reading at the roots of a very large tree in her family’s vast garden. But even here Fay wasn’t alone. “Giant stick-insects, large colorful moths, buzzing wasps and glowing humming beetles, silvery spiders, sparkling bugs would crawl, fly, beat-box, and scurry by on their way to somewhere that I could only imagine to be wonderful; a secret magical garden, perhaps?”

When Fay was just twelve years old she joined her neighborhood theater. “I loved this hot, tin-roofed theater in Darwin. Under the main stage of the very hot theater was a dark, cool room that was packed with props from past performances. Costumes from forgotten productions were hung up high and gently swayed back and forth. This was indeed a fantastical place for a child’s rich imagination. For Fay it was portal through to adventures beyond the here and now.

Amid the tangled, brilliantly colored gardens and beaches Fay played happily with kids from all over the world and Aboriginal and Torres Strait islanders’ children. The stories they told!

A horrific cyclone devastated the town on Christmas Eve, 1974. Fay witnessed the destruction of her home, her crimson Bougainvillea fairy-bower and her favorite old warrior tree of protection – the same magnificent tree that she had spent years reading and playing under. It had been uprooted and destroyed by the storm. All the trees in the tiny town had been stripped of their leaves, homes were destroyed, and the birds were nowhere to be seen.

The magic had been stolen by the storm.

Natasha’s Wood – is based on a true AUSTRALIAN STORY

It is no surprise that all these elements of Fay’s early childhood adventures have come crashing magically to the surface in a children’s adventure story. Built on unlikely friendships of bush-land creatures, amid a landscape of bursting color, Fay’s first book series named “Natasha’s Wood” will have you chuckling and discovering your own magical and musical talents.

Let the journey into the ancient bush-land begin!

Welcome to Natasha’s Wood. In these heart-warming stories Natasha and her best friend Fern (he believes in Water Dragons), discover a magical portal in the dark basement of their local theater. An enormous tapestry depicting a fox and a fairy under a gnarled old tree is their portal into a legendary, “enchanted bush-land” – a world of magic and music - dance and moving storytelling art.

Stepping through the tapestry Natasha and Fern soon discover that this bush-land is steeped in legends and beautiful magical, musical, dancing creatures.

But a storm is approaching!

Can this ancient grove, a glen that protects an enchanted old tree, be saved?

This ancient-growth tree is precious to all – it safely and very gently catches children’s

wishes and dreams. The children’s dreams keep this enchanted tree alive and the glen

that it grows in.

Are you ready to go on an adventure through Natasha's Wood?

This magical bush-land is bursting with colorful plants, lost

labyrinths and pirate’s treasures. Long sandy beaches collect

the flotsam and jetsam of the outside world – and offer up

glass bottles that hold plants and seeds from distant lands…

Treasures for little fairy-fingers to pick through.

But the storm is creeping closer. And so is a forest-foe!

On the very first adventure into this land Natasha quickly discovers that she is a real fairy and that her violin’s bow is her magical fairy-wand. But is Natasha’s music powerful enough to protect the enchanted tree? Or will she need help? Fern’s wand – is a magical paintbrush and he too will stand beside his best friend and help protect the land where the oldest library in the world resides.

Enter only if you dare – if you care - to face your fears. You may have to dance! You may have to sing! Yes, the gathering has begun. Under the branches of the gnarled old tree, the journey will begin. Join Natasha, Fern and a cast of characters that will do anything to protect THEIR enchanted old tree – that gently catches children’s wishes and dreams…

If the TREE is destroyed all will be lost; Dreams. Wishes. Trees. Fairy. Dragons. Land...Home. Oceans. All creatures that call this enchanted land - HOME - are gathering...

The enchanted forest needs to be protected - and so do our waterways and oceans.
